Flamingos Round Off WAFU B U17 Campaign With Win

Posted : 25 September 2026

Nigeria's U17 women's national team, the Flamingos, completed their WAFU B U17 Girls Cup group-stage campaign with a 2-0 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday. The result gave Nigeria four wins from four matches and maintained their perfect record in the competition.

The Flamingos made a fast start at the Lycée Scientifique in Yamoussoukro. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the fourth minute after Nigeria capitalised on an error in the Ivorian defence.

Côte d’Ivoire responded with pressure as the match progressed, but Nigeria defended their advantage. The Flamingos also created opportunities to extend their lead but entered the break with a narrow 1-0 advantage.

The hosts continued to search for an equaliser after the restart. Nigeria remained organised and threatened on the counter as Côte d’Ivoire pushed more players forward.

The second goal eventually arrived in the 83rd minute. Pattra Oparanmegwa found the net to give the Flamingos a two-goal cushion and effectively settle the contest.

The victory completed Nigeria's run of four consecutive wins in the tournament. The Flamingos had earlier defeated Niger Republic 5-0, Ghana 4-2 and Burkina Faso 2-0.

The result also confirmed Nigeria's strong position at the top of the group. Before the final group fixture, the Flamingos had already collected nine points from three matches and scored 11 goals while conceding only two.

Côte d’Ivoire entered the match in second place after two wins and one defeat. The hosts had also produced a 9-0 victory over Niger before facing Nigeria, but the loss left them unable to match the Flamingos' perfect record.

For coach Hakeem Busari, the campaign has provided valuable competitive preparation ahead of the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. Nigeria's squad has demonstrated its ability to handle different match situations, including the 4-2 victory over Ghana despite playing with 10 players for part of the second half.

The Flamingos had finished as runners-up at the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls Cup in Ghana two years ago. Their latest four-match winning run gives them further momentum as the tournament moves toward its decisive stage.
