Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after defeating the Benin Republic's Amazons 5-3 in the second leg of their final qualifying tie in Lomé on Saturday.
The victory secured an 8-5 aggregate triumph for the Flamingos, who had claimed a narrow 3-2 win in the first leg in Ikenne, Ogun State, to take a slender advantage into the decisive encounter.
Coach Akeem Busari's side made a blistering start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute through Mary Dustan to take control of the contest.
Benin Republic responded almost immediately, equalising three minutes later to spark an entertaining contest. However, the Flamingos quickly regained the initiative.
Esther Stephen restored Nigeria's lead in the 15th minute before Queen Joseph extended the advantage five minutes later, putting the visitors firmly in control.
The Amazons refused to surrender and continued to threaten with several attacking moves, but Nigeria remained composed, creating chances while maintaining their lead.
Queen Joseph completed her brace in the 76th minute to crown an outstanding individual performance and help seal a thrilling 5-3 victory for the Flamingos.
The result extends Nigeria's impressive record in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers and secures another appearance for the Flamingos on the global stage.
The team will now turn its attention to preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco, where it will aim to build on its strong performances in previous editions and compete for top honours.
