Flamingos Prepare for Training Camp Ahead of Decisive World Cup Qualifier Against Benin

Posted : 10 June 2026

The Nigerian Under-17 girls' national team will officially reopen their training camp on June 14, 2026. The technical crew selected the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne, Ogun State, as the base for the intensive preparations. This training camp marks the final countdown to their critical, two-legged final qualification round. The highly anticipated matches will determine which team picks a ticket to the global showpiece.

Head coach Akeem Busari granted his young squad a temporary rest period following their previous qualification matches. The Flamingos secured their place in this final phase after putting on a utterly dominant performance against Guinea. The Nigerian side achieved a staggering 11-0 aggregate victory over their West African counterparts. They recorded a 5-0 away win in Abidjan before sealing a 6-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture in Ikenne.

The technical crew is focusing strictly on Benin Republic, who stand as the last hurdle before the tournament. Benin booked their spot in this final stage by registering a solid 5-1 aggregate win over Sierra Leone. The Beninese side, nicknamed the Amazons, initially earned a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Stade de Kégué. They subsequently confirmed their progression by winning the second leg 2-1 on foreign soil.

The upcoming double-header promises a highly competitive West African derby with a global World Cup ticket at stake. Coach Busari noted after the previous victory that the team remains a work in progress despite their high-scoring form. He emphasized the urgent need to improve tactical transitions and overall defensive discipline before facing their next opponents. Prominent sports investor Kunle Soname previously rewarded the girls with 4.5 million Naira to boost player morale.

The successful winner of this impending aggregate tie will directly qualify for the global tournament. The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place in Morocco later this year. The tournament will run officially from October 17 through November 7, 2026. The initial leg of the Nigeria versus Benin clash will take place between July 3 and July 5.
