Nigeria’s Flamingos booked a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Rabat on Thursday.
Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan secured the victory, although Mexico struck deep into stoppage time to give Nigeria a nervous finish.
The Flamingos began brightly, applying pressure on their opponents, who threatened early through Citlalli Reyes and Natalia Perez in the fourth and seventh minutes.
Nigeria gradually settled into the contest, with Kanyinsola Yusuf and Dunstan testing the Mexican defence in the 29th and 30th minutes.
Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute when Umejiaku produced an impressive solo effort, weaving past three defenders before slotting the ball beyond goalkeeper Lopez.
Nigeria maintained their attacking intent after the break, forcing Mexico to defend deeper as Coach Hakeem Busari sought to consolidate his side’s advantage.
Busari introduced Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who sustained a knock in the first half, as Nigeria continued to control proceedings.
Dunstan doubled the Flamingos’ lead in the 71st minute, finishing from close range to register her first goal of the tournament and put Nigeria firmly in control.
Mexico, however, refused to surrender, mounting a late push that yielded a goal through Camila Campos in the 10th minute of added time.
The late strike threatened to unsettle Nigeria, but the Flamingos held on to secure their passage into the last eight.
Nigeria will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday after the South American side eliminated Germany in their Round of 16 match on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, pledged N2 million to the team following the victory.
The Nigeria Football Federation’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, also promised the players N1 million in recognition of their achievement.
