Flamingos Open WAFU-B U-17 Title Defence with Five-Star Victory Over Niger

Nigeria’s Flamingos made a powerful start to their 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Cup title defence, defeating Niger Republic 5-0 in their opening fixture in Yamoussoukro.

Captain Harmony Chidi led the charge for Nigeria, opening the scoring in the 16th minute after the Flamingos had established control of the encounter.

Nigeria dominated possession and consistently pushed the Nigerien defence deep, although the second goal did not arrive immediately despite their territorial advantage.

Awawu Bashiru eventually doubled the lead with a composed finish, while Adegbuyi saw a goal disallowed for offside as the Flamingos continued to threaten.

The Nigerian defence remained comfortable throughout the opening half, with goalkeeper Onyiyechi Opara largely untested as the team maintained its two-goal advantage into the interval.

Nigeria resumed the second half with the same attacking intent, combining quick movement with patient build-up play as Niger Republic struggled to cope with the Flamingos’ pace and creativity.

The pressure eventually produced a late flurry of goals.

Ohunene Sunday extended Nigeria’s advantage in the 83rd minute before Oluebube Umejiaku added another goal to make it 4-0.

The Flamingos were not finished, however, and Ayomide Rotimi completed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time to round off a convincing 5-0 victory.

The result gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group B fixture, alongside a clean sheet and a five-goal margin as they begin their quest to retain the regional title.

The Flamingos’ emphatic opening-day performance also showcased the squad’s attacking options, with five different players finding the net in the victory.
