Flamingos Leave It Late to Maintain Perfect WAFU-B U-17 Run

Nigeria’s Flamingos maintained their perfect start to the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso on Monday at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.

The Nigerian youngsters had to remain patient before their persistent pressure eventually produced two late goals to secure maximum points and preserve their 100 per cent record.

The Flamingos dominated possession for long spells in the opening half and pressed aggressively, but Burkina Faso defended resolutely to keep the scores level.

Nigeria created promising opportunities but could not find the finishing touch as the Burkinabe defence stood firm to take the teams into the interval goalless.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Flamingos increasing the pressure and committing more players forward in search of the breakthrough.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 82nd minute when Mary Dunstan broke the deadlock with a well-taken finish.

Burkina Faso were unable to recover from the setback, and Nigeria continued to push forward in search of a second goal.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi eventually sealed the victory deep into stoppage time, finding the net to give the Flamingos a two-goal cushion.

The late strikes reflected Nigeria’s persistence and ability to maintain attacking pressure even when the breakthrough proved difficult to find.

The victory takes the Flamingos to nine points from three matches, leaving them unbeaten and firmly at the top of the standings.

Having finished runners-up at the inaugural edition of the competition in Ghana two years ago, Nigeria will now turn their attention to the next fixture with their perfect campaign still intact.
