Nigeria’s Flamingos began their campaign at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals with a 1-2 defeat to Poland, despite a late goal that raised hopes of a comeback.
The Nigerian girls struggled to recover after conceding twice in the second half, with Poland holding firm to secure all three points in the Group B encounter.
Both teams enjoyed spells of possession during the opening 30 minutes before Poland broke the deadlock through Wiktoria Skrzypczak, who converted a 33rd-minute penalty.
The spot kick was awarded after a Video Support system review of an incident involving a Nigerian defender and a Polish attacker.
Poland went into the break with the advantage, leaving Akeem Busari’s side with work to do in the second half.
The European side appeared to have doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
However, Natalia Skrok made it 2-0 two minutes later, capitalising on a defensive clearance error by Nigeria.
Busari responded with a double substitution in the 68th minute, introducing Oluebube Umejiaku and Awawu Bashiru for Harmony Chidi and Mary Dunstan.
Kanyinsola Yusuf and Precious Oscar were also introduced 10 minutes later as Nigeria intensified their search for a way back into the contest.
The substitutions yielded an immediate reward when Yusuf reduced the deficit in the 79th minute, giving the Flamingos renewed hope of salvaging a point.
Nigeria’s hopes of earning a penalty in the 86th minute were dashed after another review involving Kemi Adegbuyi, with the referee maintaining the original decision.
The Flamingos pressed for a late equaliser, but Poland held on to claim victory and leave Nigeria without a point from their opening fixture.
Nigeria will seek to revive their campaign against Puerto Rico on Tuesday, Oct. 20, before facing Korea DPR on Friday, Oct. 23, in their remaining Group B matches.
