Nigeria’s under-17 women's team face their toughest test yet at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The Flamingos take on defending champions North Korea in a decisive final Group B fixture on Friday. Coach Akeem Busari’s side need a positive result at the Mohammed VI Football Academy to guarantee safe passage into the round of 16.
North Korea have dominated Group B after recording back-to-back victories. The Asian champions opened their campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Puerto Rico before overpowering Poland 6-1. The holders have scored 12 goals and conceded only once. Forward Kim Won-sim poses the main threat after netting four goals in her opening two matches.
Nigeria currently sit second in Group B with three points. The West Africans suffered a 2-1 loss to Poland in their opening match, with Oluebube Umejiaku scoring their lone goal. The Flamingos responded by defeating debutants Puerto Rico 2-0 through goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Precious Oscar.
A victory or draw against North Korea guarantees Nigeria a spot in the knockout rounds. A defeat leaves the Flamingos reliant on the outcome between Poland and Puerto Rico, alongside third-place tiebreakers. The sides share a balanced head-to-head record, with Nigeria winning 3-2 in 2010 before North Korea won 3-0 in 2016. Defensive discipline will be key if Busari's team hope to advance.
