Flamingos Face Brazil Hurdle in Bid for Historic U-17 World Cup Final

Posted : 06 November 2026

Nigeria’s Flamingos will seek to break new ground in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they confront Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final, with a historic place in the final at stake.

The encounter presents another major examination for coach Hakeem Busari’s side, who have overcome an uncertain start to emerge as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders in Morocco.

After losing 2-1 to Poland in their opening group match, the Nigerian youngsters responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing an impressive 3-1 triumph against defending champions North Korea.

That victory proved crucial in restoring confidence within the squad and securing their passage into the knockout rounds.

The Flamingos subsequently maintained their momentum with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 before edging Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

Azeezat Oduntan emerged as Nigeria’s match-winner against Venezuela, converting an 89th-minute penalty to secure their first semi-final appearance in the competition.

The four consecutive victories have demonstrated the team's resilience, attacking improvement and ability to deliver under pressure.

However, Brazil represent a formidable obstacle, with their technical quality and attacking strength expected to test Nigeria's defensive organisation.

One player the Flamingos must particularly contain is Greise Kelly, who has emerged as one of the tournament's outstanding performers with three goals and five assists.

Her creativity and attacking influence could pose serious problems for Nigeria, making defensive concentration essential throughout the encounter.

At the other end, goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho will again be central to Nigeria's ambitions. Her important interventions during the knockout rounds have helped keep the Flamingos competitive in difficult moments.

Nigeria will also need to maintain their attacking discipline and take advantage of scoring opportunities against a Brazilian side determined to reach the final.

Busari has described the semi-final qualification as a dream come true, expressing his determination to make Nigerians proud.

"Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement. I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud. We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do,” he told FIFA.com.

The Nigerian coach will be hoping his players translate that ambition into another outstanding performance as they pursue a place in the tournament's final.

Having recovered from their opening defeat to record four successive victories, the Flamingos have demonstrated that they possess the character to compete against the best teams.

Wednesday's encounter, however, will require another collective effort, particularly against Brazil's attacking threats.

Victory would take Nigeria into their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final, marking a historic milestone for the country's women's youth football.

The semi-final is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, Rabat, with kick-off at 6 p.m. Morocco time (7 p.m. Nigerian time).
