Flamengo Stun Chelsea with Second-Half Comeback to Reach Club World Cup Knockouts

Posted : 21 June 2025

Flamengo delivered a stirring second-half display to overcome Chelsea 3-1 on Friday, securing a place in the Club World Cup knockout stages. The Brazilian side, urged on by a passionate majority of the 54,000-strong crowd in Philadelphia, responded emphatically after falling behind to Pedro Neto's early strike.

Bruno Henrique came off the bench to inspire the comeback, scoring the equaliser and assisting Danilo's go-ahead goal before Wallace Yan sealed the result late on. Chelsea’s chances were further diminished after substitute Nicolas Jackson received a red card for a dangerous challenge.

Flamengo’s commanding win was later followed by confirmation of their last-16 spot after Tunisia’s Esperance beat Los Angeles FC 1-0 in Nashville. The North African club’s Youcef Belaili netted the game’s only goal in front of a small audience, which reportedly included actress Nicole Kidman.

The result means LAFC, surprise entrants to the tournament, can no longer qualify, and their final group clash against Chelsea will merely determine the group’s runner-up.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich held off a spirited Boca Juniors in Miami to secure their spot in the next round. Harry Kane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and after Boca equalised through Miguel Merentiel’s impressive run and finish, it was Michael Olise who settled the tie late on with a clinical strike.

The 2-1 result marked the first defeat for a South American team in the tournament and signalled the German giants’ resilience under pressure, especially in a crowd dominated by Boca supporters.

Elsewhere, Benfica thrashed Auckland City 6-0 in Orlando to keep their hopes alive and eliminate the Oceania champions. Angel Di Maria scored two penalties, with Leandro Barreiro, Vangelis Pavlidis, and Renato Sanches adding to the tally.

The match, like several others in the tournament, suffered a long weather delay due to a storm. Benfica now face Bayern in Charlotte next Tuesday, where a draw will be enough to advance and knock out Boca from Group C.
