CR Flamengo kick off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a revamped squad and strong ambitions for the tournament’s new 32-team format. Drawn into Group D alongside Chelsea, Club León, and Esperance de Tunis, Flamengo are one of South America’s standout teams, expected to challenge for one of the two spot in the knockout phase. Their group opens in the USA—beginning on June 16 against Esperance—building to a crucial match with Chelsea on June 20 in Philadelphia.
To boost their chances, Flamengo have secured the signature of experienced Italian midfielder Jorginho, who joined from Arsenal on a free transfer and is set to feature in the Club World Cup before signing through 2028.
His arrival brings leadership, tactical acumen, and big-match experience, complementing coach Filipe Luís’s tactical nous. Under Luis, Flamengo have converted their domestic success—Copa do Brasil leaders and strong in the Brasileiro—into a confident continental push.
Flamengo’s squad combines young flair and seasoned performers, blending the creativity of Giorgian de Arrascaeta and work rate of Bruno Henrique with the newcomer’s steadiness. Portuguese full-back Rodinei and emerging centre-back João Victor add depth and defensive stability. Their form in the Copa Libertadores and Série A, combined with this mix of skill and discipline, makes them a serious contender in a group featuring tactical European and African opponents.
Still, Flamengo face challenges from fixture congestion and the demands of high-level football in a packed calendar. Brazil’s top clubs often play 80–90 games a season, which can strain squad health and consistency.
To overcome these hurdles, Flamengo will rely on squad rotation, fitness management, and Jorginho’s influence in controlling midfield battles. With tactical clarity from Filipe Luís, Flamengo hope to leverage both their squad depth and continental pedigree to make a deep run.
