Nigeria’s 3-3 draw with Russia in Tuesday’s international friendly provided several lessons for coach Éric Chelle. The Super Eagles fell 3-1 behind at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium before late goals from Peter Edokpolor and Akor Adams rescued a point.
Here are five key takeaways from the six-goal encounter.
1. Nigeria showed strong character
The Super Eagles deserve credit for refusing to surrender after Russia established a two-goal advantage. Nigeria had also suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their previous outing, making the response against Russia important for Chelle's team.
Edokpolor reduced the deficit in the 78th minute before Adams completed the comeback in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The reaction showed that the young and heavily rotated squad could remain competitive under pressure.
2. Iheanacho made a strong return
Kelechi Iheanacho marked his return to the national team with an excellent finish in the 10th minute. The Bursaspor forward collected Abdullahi Bewene's pass before firing a left-footed effort into the top corner.
The goal was his 15th for Nigeria and ended a long wait for another international strike. His return gives Chelle another experienced attacking option ahead of the Super Eagles' next competitive fixtures.
3. Chelle's substitutions changed the game
Chelle's second-half changes helped Nigeria regain momentum. Akor Adams and Abdullahi Umar were introduced at the interval, while Peter Edokpolor also came on and eventually scored Nigeria's second goal.
Adams then provided the decisive moment in stoppage time. Emmanuel Fernandez started the counter-attack, Umar Abdullahi supplied the final pass and Adams finished the move to make it 3-3.
4. Defensive problems remain a concern
Nigeria's comeback should not hide the weaknesses at the back. Russia scored three times through Lechi Sadulaev, Matvey Kislyak and Aleksey Miranchuk after Nigeria had taken the lead.
The defensive concerns are particularly important after Nigeria also conceded three goals against Guinea-Bissau. Chelle will need to improve the team's organisation and reduce the number of opportunities allowed to opponents before competitive action resumes.
5. New players gave Chelle more options
The friendly gave Chelle an opportunity to assess a significantly changed squad. Several players made their senior international debuts, with Edokpolor making an immediate impact by scoring after coming off the bench.
Abdullahi Umar also impressed with his movement after entering the match, while Adams provided the late finishing quality Nigeria needed. The performances give Chelle more information about his squad depth as he prepares for the Super Eagles' November AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania.
The 3-3 draw therefore offered both encouragement and warning signs. Nigeria showed resilience and attacking potential, but the defensive lapses remain an issue Chelle must address.
