The inaugural FirstBank/Samuel Okwaraji Foundation National Secondary Schools Football Competition has produced state champions in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo, with the winning schools securing qualification for the zonal championships.
Government College, Eric Moore, claimed the Lagos State title after defeating Ikeja Senior High School 3-1 in a rain-soaked but entertaining final played on Friday at Gbagada Girls' Senior Secondary School in Gbagada, Lagos.
The victory earned Government College the right to represent Lagos State in the next phase of the nationwide competition.
In Ogun State, Orile Ilugun High School emerged champions after edging Segun Odegbami International Academy 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time at the Nawair-Ud-Deen Grammar School Sports Stadium in Abeokuta.
Bright Ville College also secured a place in the zonal stage after defeating Bishop Phillips Academy 1-0 to win the Oyo State final.
The organisers said the state finals had now been concluded across the participating states by FirstBank and the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF).
They noted that the competition was established to provide a platform for identifying and developing young football talents in secondary schools across the country while promoting grassroots football.
The organisers added that the tournament also commemorates former Super Eagles midfielder Samuel Okwaraji, who died after collapsing during a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Angola at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on August 12, 1989.
