Finidi Insists Pride of Rivers Remain Focused on Ultimate Prize

Posted : 04 March 2026

Head coach Finidi George has insisted that Rivers United FC will not lose sight of their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title ambition, despite a narrow 1–0 defeat to Bayelsa United FC.

The loss in the South-South derby may have slowed momentum, but Finidi believes the bigger picture remains intact as the league enters a decisive phase.

Reflecting on the contest, the former Super Eagles winger acknowledged that his team fell short in crucial moments, even though they showed flashes of dominance.

“It was not a bad performance, but it wasn’t good enough. We came here not to lose,” he said.

With several outstanding fixtures still to be decided, the Rivers United tactician highlighted the demanding schedule ahead and stressed the importance of consistency in the run-in.

“With what’s behind us and the outstanding matches we have, the run-in is going to be hectic. At least getting a point would have been a good result.”

Finidi pointed to missed opportunities in both halves as the turning point, noting that failing to convert chances ultimately proved decisive.

“My boys gave a good fight in the first half and created chances. In the second half as well, we had opportunities but couldn’t take them. When that happens, it becomes difficult. We have to accept it and move forward to the next game.”

Despite recent defeats to Bayelsa United, the Rivers United boss dismissed any notion of a mental block, reiterating that the league crown remains the club’s overriding objective.

“If losing to Bayelsa will give us the league, I will accept it now. Let’s lose against Bayelsa and win the league. I’m not too worried about losing to them last season and this season. The end purpose of our campaign is to win the league.”

Finidi concluded by admitting that superiority in possession and play must translate into goals if his side are to finish the job in the title race.

“We were the better side, but sometimes being the better side doesn’t win you games. You have to score goals. It’s quite unfortunate.”

Rivers United now shift focus to recovery and tactical adjustments as the NPFL title battle gathers intensity in the coming weeks.
