Finidi George Predicts NPFL Title Race Will Be Decided On Final Matchday

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has stated that the battle for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title will likely be decided on the final day of the season. The Port Harcourt based side currently sits in second place on the log with 61 points. They trail league leaders Enugu Rangers by just one point after 36 matches played.

The title race tightened significantly following the recent round of fixtures. Enugu Rangers moved to the top of the table after securing a 2-0 victory away at Bayelsa United. Meanwhile, Rivers United kept pace by defeating Abia Warriors 3-0 at home. Finidi noted that his team must now recover quickly for their penultimate fixture against bottom-placed Wikki Tourists.

Rivers United had led the standings for much of the campaign with a seven point cushion at one stage. However, a slight dip in form allowed the Flying Antelopes to overtake them in the final stretch. Finidi emphasized that his players must replicate their strong first round away form to stay in contention. He described the upcoming trip to Bauchi as a high stakes encounter where only a win will suffice.

The final weekend of the season promises maximum drama for Nigerian football fans. Enugu Rangers will travel to Lagos to face third place Ikorodu City, who are also enjoying a strong debut top flight season. Rivers United will conclude their campaign at home against Katsina United. Finidi believes that because both title contenders face tough opposition, anything remains possible until the final whistle.

Finidi George is chasing his first league title with Rivers United after joining them from Enyimba. He famously led the People's Elephant to their ninth league trophy in 2023. As the season reaches its climax, the former Super Eagles winger has urged his squad to maintain focus and avoid showing pity to any opponent. The Pride of Rivers are aiming for their second ever NPFL title following their 2022 triumph.
