Filipe Luis Backs Flamengo’s Aggressive Style Ahead of Club World Cup Showdown

Posted : 20 June 2025

Flamengo manager Filipe Luis has vowed that his team will remain committed to their aggressive and possession-oriented style when they face Chelsea in a much-anticipated Club World Cup encounter on Friday.

The Brazilian side, currently leading their domestic league, are hoping to break a 13-year run of South American losses against European clubs in the competition. Having won five matches in a row across all competitions, including a solid 2-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis in their tournament opener, Flamengo head into the match with confidence and momentum.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the showdown, Luis reiterated his commitment to Flamengo's footballing philosophy, stating that he would not alter the team’s identity based on their opponent.

He stressed that sticking to their tactical convictions, which have been built over the past eight months, is key to both consistency and player trust. “I would never, ever change my team because of an opponent,” he said. “That would be completely and absolutely wrong for the players.”

Luis, a former Chelsea player himself, acknowledged that Flamengo’s task won’t be easy against a side packed with Premier League talent, but emphasized the strength of his team’s experience and structure.

With former Juventus defenders Danilo and Alex Sandro anchoring the backline, the manager underlined the importance of unity and discipline, especially when Flamengo are out of possession. “It will be a game of sacrifice,” he noted, adding that his players are prepared to “run and fight together” when the opposition has the ball.

Currently topping Group D ahead of Chelsea due to a disciplinary tiebreaker, Flamengo are aware of the stakes in Friday’s fixture. With LAFC and Esperance yet to earn a point, the winner of this clash will likely secure early qualification for the knockout stages.

Despite Chelsea’s star power, Luis remains optimistic. “The only way to win is with all 11 players pulling in the same direction,” he said. “Knowing this is the way forward, we definitely have a chance.”
