FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets Pay Price for Missed Chances in Spain Defeat

Nigeria’s Falconets were made to pay for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal as former champions Spain secured a 2-0 victory in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

Spain, champions in 2022, took advantage of their opportunities to claim all three points at the Arena Sosnowiec, while Nigeria struggled to convert their promising moments into goals.

Marisa Garcia gave Spain the lead in the 13th minute, calmly beating goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to put the European side ahead.

The early goal forced the Falconets to chase the game, but Coach Moses Aduku’s side gradually settled and created opportunities as the half progressed.

Nigeria, however, lacked the decisive finish needed to punish Spain, who went into the interval with their narrow advantage intact.

The Falconets returned from the break with greater attacking intent and enjoyed periods of dominance as they searched for an equaliser.

Their efforts produced several attempts on goal, but Spain’s goalkeeper Lopez remained composed between the posts, making crucial interventions to preserve her side’s lead.

With Nigeria committing more players forward in search of a leveller, Spain found space on the counter-attack and extended their advantage in the 72nd minute.

Alba Cerrato raced through before beating Uzoma to make it 2-0 and effectively end Nigeria’s hopes of salvaging a point from the encounter.

The Falconets continued to press until the final whistle but could not find a way through a disciplined Spanish defence.

The defeat leaves Nigeria needing a positive result in their next Group F fixture to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The Falconets will face China PR on Thursday, Sept. 10, in their second group match, with Aduku’s side expected to work on their finishing and defensive organisation before the crucial encounter.
