FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Unstoppable Flamingos Sail into Semi-Finals, to Meet Brazil

Posted : 03 November 2026

Nigeria’s Flamingos continued their impressive run at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a dramatic 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela on Sunday, setting up a semi-final meeting with Brazil.

Azeezatt Oduntan emerged as Nigeria’s match-winner, converting a late penalty in the 89th minute to settle a tense encounter and send the West Africans into the last four.

The Flamingos dominated much of the attacking exchanges, particularly in the first half, but struggled to find a way past Venezuela goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales, who produced several important saves to frustrate Nigeria.

Despite creating promising opportunities, Nigeria could not break the deadlock before the interval, while midfielder Favour Nkwocha received a caution as the contest became increasingly competitive.

Head coach Hakeem Busari subsequently introduced Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in search of greater attacking penetration as Nigeria intensified their efforts after the restart.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the closing stages when top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku won a penalty for Nigeria in the 88th minute.

The referee initially awarded the spot kick before consulting the VAR monitor to review the incident. Following the review, the decision was upheld, handing the Flamingos a golden opportunity to secure qualification.

Oduntan stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the 89th minute, sparking celebrations among the Nigerian players and technical crew.

The late strike proved decisive as Nigeria held on to claim a hard-earned victory and extend their impressive campaign at the global tournament.

The Flamingos will now turn their attention to a challenging semi-final encounter against Brazil, who booked their own place in the last four with a 2-1 victory over China.

Nigeria will approach the encounter with renewed confidence as they seek to move a step closer to winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
