FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Target Quarter-Final Spot Against Mexico

Posted : 27 October 2026

Nigeria’s Flamingos will seek to extend their impressive run at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco when they face Mexico in Thursday’s Round of 16 encounter.

The Nigerian girls booked their place in the knockout stage with a convincing 3-1 victory over two-time champions Korea DPR on Friday, raising expectations ahead of the crucial clash.

Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, has urged the team to sustain their determination and focus as they pursue a quarter-final berth.

Ikpeme gave the charge during a visit to the team’s training session on Monday, commending the players for their performance against Korea DPR.

He encouraged the Flamingos to approach the Mexico encounter with the same commitment, taking each match as it comes while maintaining their ambition of progressing further in the competition.

The NFF official also pledged to attend Thursday’s fixture to lend his support to the team.

Nigeria have scored six goals in three matches at the tournament, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku contributing two goals each.

Precious Oscar also found the net against Puerto Rico, while Rodiat Kanyinsola Yusuf scored with a free-kick against Korea DPR.

However, Mexico present a formidable challenge, having also demonstrated their pedigree on the global stage.

Thursday’s meeting brings together two nations with bronze-medal experience at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, adding another layer of intrigue to the knockout contest.

Nigeria secured their first podium finish in the competition in India four years ago after defeating Germany 3-2 on penalties in the third-place match.

The Flamingos had established a commanding 3-0 lead after 63 minutes, only for Germany to fight back and force a penalty shootout at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Mexico also claimed bronze at last year’s tournament in Morocco, defeating Brazil 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

With both teams familiar with the demands of competing at this level, Nigeria will need to combine their attacking quality with defensive discipline to overcome the Mexicans.

The Flamingos’ ability to convert their scoring opportunities while maintaining composure under pressure could prove decisive as they pursue another quarter-final appearance on the global stage.
