FIFA Opens Disciplinary Cases Against Argentina Players After World Cup Final Incidents

Posted : 29 July 2026

FIFA has confirmed the opening of disciplinary proceedings against several members of Argentina's squad and coaching staff following the team's defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The governing body acted after post-match confrontations erupted at the end of the championship match in New York, where Spain secured a 1-0 victory after extra time. Several Argentina players and officials became involved in heated exchanges with members of the Spanish team after the final whistle.

Among those facing disciplinary action are Argentina internationals Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Leandro Paredes, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Spain midfielder Pablo Martin Paez Gavira was also cited in the proceedings. FIFA stated that the charges being considered range from assault allegations to unsporting conduct.

In a separate matter, FIFA is also reviewing events that followed Argentina's 2-1 semifinal victory over England. The investigation focuses on players displaying a banner bearing the message, "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine"), which may have violated regulations prohibiting political or non-sporting demonstrations during official competitions.

According to FIFA, the investigations will examine potential breaches of its disciplinary code, including rules covering non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination, racist behaviour, and match security regulations.

The governing body added that the wider investigation also takes into account allegations involving discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, failures to follow security and match protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by players and supporters, and objects allegedly thrown by spectators during several Argentina matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
