FIFA Introduces Body Cams, Instant Offside Tech for Club World Cup Referees

Posted : 13 June 2025

FIFA is set to implement a suite of new technologies at the upcoming Club World Cup, which begins this weekend in the United States. Among the headline innovations is a revamped semi-automatic offside system designed to immediately halt play when a player who is more than 10 centimeters offside touches the ball.

Unlike the current system, which often involves a VAR delay before confirming offside infractions, this upgraded version will send instantaneous alerts to officials, minimizing pauses and enhancing player safety.

The motivation behind this swift offside detection partly stems from a previous incident where Nottingham Forest's Taiwo Awoniyi collided with the goalpost after chasing a ball from an unflagged offside position.

FIFA's refereeing head, Pierluigi Collina, emphasized the system’s preventative value, aiming to keep the pace of matches smooth while reducing risks of injuries. Additionally, FIFA is trialing a new rule restricting goalkeepers to an eight-second limit for ball possession. After three seconds, a countdown will begin, and exceeding the time limit could result in the opposing team receiving a corner kick.

In another major development, referees at the Club World Cup will wear body cameras that record behind-the-scenes moments such as warm-ups, tunnel walks, and the coin toss. While these clips will be shared with fans later, they won’t include sensitive content or be shown live during matches. This initiative is meant to enrich the entertainment value of the games by offering a more immersive viewing experience without compromising officiating integrity.

To boost transparency, spectators in the stadium will be shown the same video footage that VAR officials use, accompanied by the main referee’s commentary. However, internal VAR discussions will remain private for now, as FIFA continues to refine its officiating protocols. Collina also urged assistant referees to be more assertive in offside situations that are clearly visible, asserting that obvious calls—such as players being two meters offside—should not require VAR intervention.
