FG Finally Delivers Houses to 1994 Super Eagles, Nearly Three Decades Later

Posted : 26 June 2025

In a significant gesture of recognition, the Federal Government has finally honoured its promise to the legendary members of the 1994 Super Eagles squad, allocating three-bedroom houses to surviving players nearly 29 years after their historic Africa Cup of Nations victory in Tunisia.

The long-awaited handover took place in Abuja during a brief ceremony where Certificates of Occupancy were presented to the former players by the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

The original pledge was made by then-Head of State, General Sani Abacha, in recognition of Nigeria's continental triumph. Over the years, many squad members either passed away or continued awaiting the reward, prompting repeated requests for fulfilment .

During the official commissioning of national housing estates in Lokoja, Nasarawa State, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the FCT Minister of State, Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, approved the allocation to 22 squad members in their respective states of choice.

In his remarks, Fashola stated that beneficiaries were given the opportunity to select their preferred locations, and the government aimed to complete the process efficiently to avoid further delays.

The gesture acknowledges football legends such as Peter Rufai, Austin Eguavoen, Sunday Oliseh, Uche Okechukwu, Mutiu Adepoju, Victor Ikpeba, Emmanuel Amunike, Samson Siasia, and others—many of whom have significantly contributed to Nigerian football history.

President Buhari described the occasion as a long-overdue fulfilment of national promises, noting:

“It’s better late than never… we are redeeming a promise made to these patriotic Nigerians”.

The formal presentation of keys and title documents is scheduled to continue across the 34 states participating in Phase I of the National Housing Programme, ensuring that all beneficiaries receive full possession in their chosen locations.

This fulfilment marks a poignant end to a nearly three-decade wait, celebrating and rewarding the unsung heroes who brought Nigeria its first AFCON title on foreign soil.
