Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has released a 23-man squad for Nigeria's upcoming international friendlies, handing first-time call-ups to Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, Hamburg forward Philip Otele, and Genk winger Collins Yira Sor. Nigeria will face Iran on March 27 and Jordan on March 31, both games held in Antalya, Turkey. The trio join an experienced core including Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, and Bruno Onyemaechi; while Victor Osimhen and Stanley Nwabali are the most notable absentees.
Emmanuel Fernandez: The Bully at the Back
Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United in a reported €2.9 million deal last summer and has enjoyed an impressive debut season at Ibrox, making 26 appearances and scoring six goals. The 24-year-old centre-back has also helped his side keep 10 clean sheets; his strongest month was January, when Rangers conceded just once and he was voted the club's Player of the Month.
His physical presence, aerial dominance, and comfort passing from the back make him a natural fit for Chelle's style of play. Born in London to Nigerian parents, he was eligible to represent England but has firmly committed to the Super Eagles; his market value has since risen to €9 million according to Transfermarkt. He wears the number 37 shirt at Rangers as a tribute to his brother, who passed away at that age; he is the youngest of eight siblings.
Philip Otele: The Trickster on the Wing
Otele recently joined Hamburger SV on loan from FC Basel during the January transfer window and has started five of seven possible Bundesliga matches, contributing one assist. Born in Port Harcourt, he combined football with his education early on and even had a brief training spell with Arsenal as a teenager.
The 26-year-old left winger is a high-volume dribbler with pace, trickery, and a relentless desire to have the ball at his feet. His invitation reflects his strong form in Germany; he brings creativity and a direct threat from wide areas that could push Moses Simon for his starting spot on the left wing.
Yira Sor: The Speedster
Sor has been at Genk since 2023 and has registered 17 goals and eight assists in 113 appearances; he joined from Slavia Prague in a deal worth €6.5 million. This season, he has recorded four goals and one assist in 23 league appearances for Genk.
Sor's pace reportedly blew Chelle away when the coach watched him in a recent league game; a source close to the setup described him as "the fastest player he has ever seen in a while." He reached a top speed of 39km/h earlier this season. He follows a well-worn path for Nigerian talent through Genk, a club that previously developed Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi.
The March window represents a genuine opportunity for all three debutants. Chelle is using this window to test squad depth as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approach, and a strong showing in Antalya could cement a place in the qualifying squad.
