Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has extended an invitation to Felix Agu, the defender from Werder Bremen, to join the team’s training sessions ahead of the Unity Cup tournament in London. This move is part of preparations as Nigeria looks to build a competitive squad for upcoming fixtures.
Chelle announced a 26-player roster for the Unity Cup, alongside a streamlined 21-man squad for an international friendly against Russia. Interestingly, some of Nigeria’s top players, including Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Alex Iwobi, were absent from both selections.
Felix Agu impressed throughout the recent Bundesliga season, scoring three goals in 22 appearances for Werder Bremen. His performances earned him the chance to train with the national team as Nigeria seeks to expand its defensive options.
In the 2024-2025 Bundesliga campaign, Agu stood out by winning three penalties for his club—the highest number among all players in the German top division, as reported by Squawka. This statistic highlights his influence and threat in the attacking phase.
Despite being invited to train with the Super Eagles during the Unity Cup, Agu was not named in the squad for the friendly against Russia scheduled for June 6 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. This is partly because many regular national team players are still focused on club commitments.
Agu’s potential debut for Nigeria has faced obstacles due to incomplete paperwork. According to German media outlet Die DeichStube, bureaucratic issues are preventing him from officially representing the Super Eagles. Although born in Germany and having played twice for their U21 team in 2019, Agu remains eligible for Nigeria as he has not appeared for Germany’s senior side.
Nigeria is set to compete in the Unity Cup alongside Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Super Eagles will face Ghana in the second semifinal on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium, aiming to showcase their strength ahead of World Cup qualifying matches.
