Federal Government Delivers National Reward Certificates to Super Eagles

Posted : 24 December 2025

The Federal Government has completed the distribution of housing and land rewards promised to members of the Super Eagles for their impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria finished second at the tournament after losing 2–1 to the host nation in the final, which was played in 2024.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that players have now received official certificates for the plots of land and housing units approved by President Bola Tinubu. The documents were presented to the squad on Monday at their training camp in Fes, Morocco, ahead of their next continental assignment.

Following the team’s return from the AFCON tournament, President Tinubu hosted the players at the Presidential Villa, where each squad member was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). In addition, the president approved a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory and a residential flat for every player as recognition of their achievement.

According to reports, certificates confirming the OON honours were also handed to the players by Senator Abdul Ningi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, alongside the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau described the gesture as clear evidence of the government’s commitment to sports development in Nigeria. He noted that the timely fulfilment of the promises showed respect for the players and reinforced confidence ahead of another AFCON campaign.

Gusau added that the federation remains focused on providing quality travel arrangements, accommodation, and logistics for the team despite global economic pressures. He expressed optimism that the Super Eagles are well-prepared and capable of lifting the trophy in Morocco.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, said the government made a deliberate decision to honour all pledges before the tournament began. He contrasted the swift action with delays experienced in the past, describing the move as part of a new direction for Nigerian sports under the Renewed Hope agenda.

Nigeria will open their Group C campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco. The Super Eagles arrived in Fes on December 18 from their final training camp in Cairo and will also face Tunisia and Uganda as they pursue a fourth AFCON title.
