FC Copenhagen's deadline signing drops from Russia squad; eligible for Nigeria

Posted : 04 September 2024

German Onugkha, who finalized his transfer to FC Copenhagen on September 2, has opted out of the Russian national team’s upcoming friendly matches against Thailand and Vietnam. Onugkha, born in Moscow, remains uncapped internationally but holds dual eligibility to play for both Russia and Nigeria due to his Nigerian father.

The 28-year-old forward gained prominence last season with Vejle Boldklub in the Danish Superliga, where he emerged as the league's top scorer. His impressive form continued this season, scoring 15 goals and providing 2 assists in 31 league games last season, and adding 3 goals in 6 appearances before his recent move to FC Copenhagen.

Despite his standout performances, Onugkha had been given the opportunity to join the Russian national team by coach Valery Karpin, who also manages FC Rostov. However, Onugkha’s withdrawal was confirmed by FC Copenhagen’s sports director, Sune Smith-Nielsen, in a report by Viaplay Sport News.

Smith-Nielsen described the situation as "a special case" due to the complex geopolitical issues surrounding Russia’s involvement in international sports. He noted that the ongoing situation in Russia has created difficulties for athletes and teams navigating international competitions.

Smith-Nielsen mentioned that Onugkha’s decision to withdraw was made after careful consideration, reflecting the challenging circumstances surrounding Russian sports. He did not provide details on the club's influence over the decision but emphasized the importance of aligning with current international dynamics.

The withdrawal of Onugkha from the Russian squad potentially opens up opportunities for him to represent Nigeria, his father's homeland, should he choose to pursue that path. This move reflects a broader trend of athletes navigating complex international and political landscapes.

Despite Onugkha’s clear interest in playing for his country of birth, his decision underscores the nuanced choices athletes must make in light of geopolitical tensions. This development may lead to further discussions about his future international commitments.
