The father of Super Eagles right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel has provided new details regarding the international defender’s background. Nelson Osayi revealed that his son was born in Europe, contradicting previous widespread reports that suggested a birthplace in Okija, Anambra State. Although he did not specify the exact country, Nelson confirmed that the family lived abroad during that period.

Nelson Osayi, who was born in Lagos and had a footballing background himself, explained his decision to relocate from Nigeria years ago. He moved to Germany and later Spain in search of better prospects for his family. He admitted that his primary goal was to ensure his children were born outside of Nigeria to provide them with different opportunities.

Despite the European upbringing, the father maintained a strong connection between his children and their Nigerian heritage. He stated that he had been teaching Bright about Nigeria since the player was only a year old. This cultural grounding was intentional, as Nelson always anticipated that his son would eventually represent the Nigerian national team.

The process of bringing the former Fenerbahçe star into the national fold required significant administrative effort from the Nigeria Football Federation. Prior to his debut against Portugal, the defender did not hold a Nigerian passport. To resolve this, embassy officials traveled to Istanbul to fast-track the necessary documentation for the player.

In a recently released interview with Elegbete TV Sports, Nelson shared the advice he gave his son about playing in Africa. He warned the defender that the social and cultural environment in Nigeria differs significantly from the European lifestyle. He specifically cautioned him about safety and local customs to help him adjust to his duties with the Super Eagles.

Bright Osayi-Samuel has since become a vital component of the Nigerian defensive unit. He has earned 34 caps for the national team and was instrumental in the squad's recent success. His contributions were particularly notable during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria secured a bronze-medal finish.

The clarification of his birthplace does not affect his eligibility or his commitment to the three-time African champions. He remains one of the most consistent performers in the current squad under the national team technical crew.
