Fanny Amun Calls for Two-Term Limit and Wider Representation in NFF Congress

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary Fanny Amun has called for major reforms to the federation's statutes. He wants the NFF Congress opened to more credible, experienced and knowledgeable football stakeholders.

Amun made the call in Abuja on Monday while speaking to journalists after submitting the report of the NFF fact-finding committee. The committee was formed to investigate Nigeria's recent struggles in international football, with particular focus on the Super Falcons' failure at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria's early exit from the WAFCON ended its hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. The setback means the Super Falcons will miss the Women's World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

The six-member committee examined governance, financial management, technical development, grassroots football, player welfare, national team administration and domestic league structures. It also identified concerns involving player release, team preparation, medical management, camp administration, technical coordination and player selection.

Governance emerged as one of the committee's major concerns. Amun said the NFF statutes should be changed to accommodate more genuine football stakeholders and allow wider participation in the federation's Congress.

The committee recommended that Congress members should be knowledgeable, credible and experienced. It also proposed a maximum of two terms in office for Congress members to encourage accountability and create opportunities for new leadership.

Amun argued that prolonged occupancy of influential positions can restrict fresh ideas and limit opportunities for other qualified stakeholders. The proposed term limit is therefore aimed at improving accountability and creating a more open football administration.

The committee also raised concerns about alleged interference in national team affairs. These included claims of undue influence in player invitations, financial inducements and officials having excessive access to national team camps. The report called for all allegations to be properly investigated and for stronger internal accountability mechanisms.

On the Super Falcons, the committee found no evidence that individual players influenced selection. It also confirmed that defender Ashleigh Plumptre was unavailable for the WAFCON after undergoing surgery, with medical information from Nigeria and her Saudi Arabian club supporting the decision.

Beyond governance, the committee recommended long-term plans for men's and women's football, regular training for technical and administrative personnel, stronger league structures and improved use of technology and data. It also called for better age-verification systems and more effective preparation for international competitions.

Amun stressed that the report would have little value without implementation. He called for political will and a commitment from football stakeholders to turn the recommendations into practical reforms that can restore confidence in Nigerian football.
