Falconets target winning start against Spain at FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s National Team, the Falconets, will begin their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign against Spain on Monday, with Head Coach Moses Aduku demanding a determined performance and maximum points from the Group F encounter.

The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. local time (4 p.m. Nigeria time) at the Stadion Sosnowiec, with Nigeria aiming to make an early statement in a group that also includes China and New Caledonia.

Aduku acknowledged Spain’s pedigree but said his players were prepared for the challenge and fully aware of the importance of securing victory in their opening fixture.

“We are looking forward to the match against Spain with high expectations. We are ready and set to go. Spain is a good side, no doubt,” Aduku said.

The coach stressed that the Falconets would approach the encounter with the intensity of a final, knowing that three points could provide a significant advantage ahead of their remaining group matches.

“However, we will approach the game like a Cup final because we want to win. The three points will put us in good stead in our group phase campaign,” he said.

Spain enter the contest with an impressive record at the competition in recent years, having reached the final in 2018 in France before losing 3-1 to Japan.

Despite the defeat, Spain’s Patricia Guijarro won the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe awards at the tournament.

The Spaniards went a step further at the 2020 edition in Costa Rica, winning the title and completing their rise among the leading forces in women’s youth football.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have their own rich history at the tournament. The Falconets are two-time runners-up, having first reached the final in 2010 before losing 2-0 to hosts Germany in Bielefeld.

That campaign included a memorable penalty-shootout victory over the United States in the semi-final in Augsburg, which made Nigeria the first African team to reach the final of the competition.

The Falconets again finished runners-up in 2014, losing 1-0 to Germany after extra time in Montreal. Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala was one of the outstanding players of the tournament, winning both the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe after scoring seven goals.

With such history on both sides, Monday’s encounter promises to be a significant early test for the Falconets.

Aduku is expected to set up his team to play with confidence and intensity as Nigeria seek to secure a positive result against the European side.

After Spain, the Falconets will face China on Thursday before concluding their Group F fixtures against New Caledonia on Sunday.

A victory over Spain would provide Nigeria with an important platform as they pursue qualification for the knockout stage and seek another deep run at the global youth championship.
