Falconets Hold China as Knockout Hopes Go Down to Final Game

Nigeria’s Falconets kept their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign alive after battling China PR to a goalless draw in their second Group F match in Poland on Thursday.

The encounter at Arena Sosnowiec produced an intense contest, with both teams creating opportunities but struggling to find the decisive touch in front of goal.

Coach Moses Aduku’s side showed greater attacking purpose as the first half progressed, with Janet Akekoromowei emerging as Nigeria’s main threat.

Akekoromowei went close in the 17th minute before coming close again in the 38th minute and deep into first-half added time as the Falconets finished the opening period strongly.

Kafayat Mafisere also helped Nigeria maintain pressure, winning a corner in the 33rd minute as the Falconets gradually took control of the attacking exchanges.

China, however, remained dangerous and forced the Nigerian defence to stay alert. Huang Jiaxin, Zhou Xinyi and Song Lijuan all attempted to break the deadlock, while Xue Sifan delivered two threatening corners.

Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma stood firm whenever called upon, while the defence successfully resisted China’s pressure to ensure the teams went into the interval level.

China made an early second-half adjustment, bringing on Chen Ruilin for Xiao Yafei, and the substitute immediately added more urgency to the Chinese attack.

Chen, Xue and Huang subsequently tested Nigeria, but the Falconets responded with a series of attacking moves of their own.

Precious Oscar came close in the 54th minute, while Mafisere threatened in the 56th and 60th minutes before Queen Joseph also had an opportunity in the 58th minute.

Nigeria appeared to have been handed a major opportunity to break the deadlock in the 74th minute when a penalty was awarded.

However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review, leaving the Falconets frustrated as the search for a winner continued.

Neither side could produce the breakthrough in the closing stages, with the points ultimately shared after a fiercely contested encounter.

The draw gives Nigeria one point from two matches in Group F, leaving the Falconets needing a strong finish against New Caledonia in their final group fixture.

Aduku’s team will face New Caledonia on Sunday, Sept. 13, in Łódź, knowing that victory would significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

With their tournament hopes still intact, the Falconets must now convert their attacking promise into goals when they return to action in their decisive final group match.
