Falconets held to 1-1 draw by Korea Republic in final World Cup warm-up

Nigeria’s Falconets were held to a 1-1 draw by Korea Republic on Tuesday in their final preparatory match ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Poland.

Forward Mary Mamudu continued her impressive pre-tournament form by putting Nigeria ahead, but Korea Republic fought back to earn a share of the spoils through a late penalty, with only 12 minutes remaining.

The result means the Falconets head into the global tournament with encouraging momentum after recording a 1-0 victory over hosts Poland in Brzeg on Friday.

The coach’s side will now shift their attention fully to the competition proper, where they face a stern opening test against Spain in Sosnowiec on Monday evening.

Nigeria, two-time silver medallists at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2010 and 2014, will be aiming to make another deep run in the tournament, having established themselves as one of Africa’s leading forces at the age-grade level.

Following the Spain opener, the Falconets will return to Sosnowiec on Thursday, Sept. 10, to face China before rounding off their Group-stage campaign against New Caledonia in Łódź on Sunday, Sept. 13.

With their final warm-up completed, Nigeria will now look to convert the confidence gained from their unbeaten build-up into a strong start when the tournament gets underway on Saturday.
