Falconets Face Malawi in High-Stakes World Cup Qualifying Tie In Ikenne

Posted : 01 May 2026

Nigeria’s U-20 national women’s team, the Falconets, are set to face the Malawi Young Scorchers in a crucial first-leg encounter on Saturday, May 2, 2026. The match will take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne; kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time. This fixture marks the final hurdle in the African qualifying series for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Falconets entered their final training phase in Ikenne after concluding an intensive three-week camp in Abuja. Head coach Moses Aduku expressed absolute confidence in his squad’s physical readiness and tactical discipline. Nigeria reached this stage following dominant aggregate victories over Rwanda and Senegal; they have never missed a world tournament since its inception.

Coach Aduku will have to navigate this tie without star forward Janet Akekoromowei, who remains sidelined due to a serious injury. However, the squad is bolstered by the presence of captain Joy Igbokwe and clinical striker Mary Lucky Nkpa. The team recently demonstrated their offensive prowess by defeating Lakeside Queens 9-0 in a preparatory friendly match.

Malawi arrives in Nigeria with a squad that blends emerging talent and senior-level experience. Head coach Maggie Chombo has included four senior national team players to provide leadership and grit. Midfielders Leticia Chinyamula and Olivia Phikani are expected to be central to Malawi’s strategy after featuring in the FIFA Series in Kenya last month.

The Young Scorchers earned their spot in this final round by thrashing Guinea-Bissau 6-2 on aggregate. Coach Chombo’s side is known for a compact defensive shape and quick transitions. Nigeria will need a convincing result at home before traveling to Lilongwe for the second leg.

The return fixture is scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium. The aggregate winner will secure one of the four available slots for African representatives at the World Cup. Poland will host the global tournament from September 5 to September 27, 2026.
