Falconets Face England Test in Battle for FIFA U-20 World Cup Quarter-Final

Nigeria’s Falconets will seek to carry the confidence from their emphatic group-stage finish into the knockout phase when they face England’s Young Lionesses in the Round of 16 at Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała, Poland.

The encounter offers Moses Aduku’s side a chance to reach the quarter-finals and sustain their campaign for a deep run at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria secured their knockout ticket in spectacular fashion, dismantling New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F fixture to finish second behind Spain.

The Falconets had earlier opened the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw with China PR, leaving them needing a strong result against New Caledonia to progress.

They responded emphatically, with Winner Onajite David grabbing a hat-trick and Ramotalahi Kareem among the other scorers as Nigeria produced a dominant attacking display, particularly after the interval.

Janet Akekoromowei, who plays for SL Benfica, also impressed in the big victory and will be among the attacking options available to Aduku as Nigeria face a more demanding challenge.

England reached the knockout phase after finishing third in Group B, collecting four points from three matches.

The Young Lionesses drew 1-1 with Canada in their opening fixture, defeated Tanzania 5-1 before suffering a 2-1 loss to Brazil in their final group game.

England finished above Canada on goals scored after both teams ended the group stage on the same number of points.

With a quarter-final place at stake, Thursday’s encounter promises to be another significant examination of Nigeria’s ability to translate their attacking strength into knockout-stage success.

Victory would send the Falconets into the last eight, where they would meet either hosts Poland or Colombia.
