Falconets Face China in Must-Win U-20 World Cup Clash

Nigeria's Falconets will face China in their second Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland on Thursday, September 10. The encounter is crucial for Nigeria after a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening game.

The Falconets must improve their attacking efficiency and defensive organisation against a Chinese side that opened its campaign with a 5-0 victory over New Caledonia. China currently lead Group F, while Spain also have three points after defeating Nigeria.

Coach Moses Aduku is expected to make adjustments as Nigeria look to respond to the Spain defeat. Christiana Uzoma could retain her place in goal, with Jumai Adebayo, Onyedikachi Ekezie, Tumininu Adeshina and Favour Nkwocha expected to provide the defensive cover.

Rebecca Adegbemile and Kafayat Mafisere could form the central midfield pairing. Queen Joseph and Tosin Rafiu are expected to operate in more advanced positions and provide creativity during Nigeria's transitions.

Folajomi Olabiyi and Mary Mamudu could lead the attack. Mamudu scored Nigeria's winning goal against Poland in a pre-tournament friendly and also found the net in the 1-1 draw against Korea Republic before the World Cup.

However, Nigeria now have an additional attacking option. Benfica forward Janet Akekoromowei has joined the Falconets in Poland after missing the Spain game because of documentation issues in Portugal. Her arrival could give Aduku another option in attack against China.

The Falconets' predicted XI against China is:

Goalkeeper: Christiana Uzoma

Defenders: Jumai Adebayo, Onyedikachi Ekezie, Tumininu Adeshina, Favour Nkwocha

Midfielders: Rebecca Adegbemile, Kafayat Mafisere, Queen Joseph, Tosin Rafiu

Forwards: Folajomi Olabiyi, Mary Mamudu

Nigeria have reached the U-20 Women's World Cup final twice, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014. They are also the only African nation to have featured at every edition of the competition since its launch.

The Falconets therefore have considerable tournament experience behind them, but their immediate priority is to collect points against China. A defeat would leave their qualification hopes in serious danger, while a victory would put them back in contention before their final group game against New Caledonia on September 13.

With the top two teams in each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage, Nigeria still have a route through to the next round. The team must now combine defensive discipline, stronger midfield control and more clinical finishing to keep that route open.
