Falconets Edge Closer to Poland 2026 with Dominant 2-0 First-Leg Victory Over Malawi

The Nigerian Falconets established a commanding lead in their final qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Playing at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, the hosts defeated Malawi 2-0 in the first-leg encounter. After a scoreless first half, the Nigerian side utilized superior conditioning and tactical pressure to break down a resilient Malawian defense.

The breakthrough arrived just one minute after the restart when sustained pressure forced an error. Malawi defender Maureen Kenneth inadvertently turned the ball into her own net in the 46th minute while attempting to clear a dangerous cross. This goal shifted the momentum entirely in favor of the Falconets; they began to find more space as the visitors were forced to push forward.

Kindness Ifeanyi doubled the advantage in the 58th minute to put the tie firmly in Nigeria's control. She received a precise pass from Faridat Abdulwahab before showing immense composure to round the Malawian goalkeeper. With an open net before her, Ifeanyi calmly slotted the ball home to secure the second goal of the afternoon.

Off the pitch, the team received significant motivation from Remo Stars FC president, Hon. Kunle Soname. He rewarded the players with one million naira for each goal scored during the match. This gesture highlighted the growing domestic support for women’s football as the team prepares for the final push toward World Cup qualification.

In other continental fixtures, Cameroon took a significant step toward qualification by defeating Tanzania 3-1 in Yaoundé. Meanwhile, the clash between Côte d'Ivoire and Benin ended in a -1-1 draw in Abidjan, leaving that tie wide open. Ghana is also set to host Uganda in the final first-leg fixture of the round.

The Falconets will now travel to Lilongwe for the return leg at the Bingu National Stadium on May 9, 2026. A draw or a narrow defeat would still be enough to see Nigeria secure one of Africa's four spots for the tournament in Poland. With two goals in hand and a clean sheet, the team looks well-positioned to complete the mission.
