Falconets Complete Final Training Phase Ahead of Spain World Cup Showdown

Nigeria’s Falconets have arrived in Katowice as preparations enter the final phase ahead of their opening fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. The Nigeria U-20 women’s national team departed their training base in Trzebnica on Thursday and checked into the Novotel Katowice Centrum.

The Falconets spent 10 days in Trzebnica, where head coach Moses Aduku and his technical crew focused on tactical organisation, technical execution, physical conditioning and team cohesion. The camp also helped the players adapt to the Polish environment and improve their match sharpness before the tournament.

Nigeria completed its pre-tournament friendly programme unbeaten. The team defeated hosts Poland 1-0 before playing out a 1-1 draw with Korea Republic in their final warm-up match.

Mary Mamudu was the key figure in both matches. She scored the winning goal against Poland in first-half stoppage time before finding the net again against Korea Republic. Her two goals have provided a positive attacking boost for Aduku's side ahead of the World Cup.

The friendly against Korea Republic also gave the coaching staff another opportunity to assess the squad against strong opposition. Aduku admitted Nigeria missed chances to win the match but praised the quality of the Korean team.

Aduku has also confirmed that there are no injury concerns within the squad. The coach said the players are ready for the tournament and stressed that the team will approach the competition one match at a time.

The focus is now firmly on Spain, with Nigeria set to face the European side in their Group F opener in Sosnowiec on Monday, September 7. The Falconets will then meet China PR on September 10 before completing their group-stage campaign against New Caledonia on September 13.

Nigeria enters the tournament as a two-time runner-up and remains one of the few nations to have appeared at every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. The Falconets reached the final in 2010 and 2014, while they also made the semi-finals in 2012.

The squad will now use its final days in Katowice to make tactical adjustments and prepare specifically for Spain. A strong result in the opener would give Nigeria an important early platform in a group that also contains China PR and tournament debutants New Caledonia.
