FAI Withdraws Support for Gianni Infantino as IFA Backs UEFA

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has withdrawn its backing for Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA president, adding to the growing pressure on the FIFA chief. The decision follows widespread criticism surrounding his abandoned proposal to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial operations to private investors.

The FAI said its board had reviewed the situation and decided to rescind the letter of support it had previously issued. The organisation cited concerns over governance, transparency and the lack of meaningful consultation, while stressing that it remains grateful for FIFA’s support of Irish football.

The move comes after UEFA joined CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation in criticizing Infantino’s leadership. Several European football associations have also withdrawn their endorsements, increasing uncertainty around Infantino’s campaign for another term.

Northern Ireland’s Irish Football Association (IFA) has stopped short of formally withdrawing its support but confirmed that it backs UEFA’s current position. The association said it was aware of the wider concerns within football and would continue to assess the situation through the appropriate governance channels.
