Ex-Rangers Star Labels Kelechi Iheanacho as Celtic’s Best Forward After Cup Heroics

Posted : 20 April 2026

Kelechi Iheanacho has earned high praise from former Rangers star Steven Thompson after a match-winning performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final. The Nigerian international came off the bench to help Celtic secure a 6-2 victory against St Mirren at Hampden Park on Sunday. Iheanacho scored twice during extra time to ensure the Hoops progressed to the final.

The match had ended 2-2 after 90 minutes following a spirited comeback by St Mirren. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill introduced Iheanacho late in the second half for Yang Hyun-jun. The forward made an immediate impact by heading home a cross from James Forrest in the 96th minute. He then added a second goal with a clinical strike to put the game out of reach.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Thompson claimed that Iheanacho offers more than any other striker at the club. He noted that the Nigerian's ability to link play sets him apart from his teammates. Thompson described him as the most rounded striker at Celtic by a significant margin. He also highlighted the forward's deep understanding of the game and tactical intelligence.

Iheanacho joined Celtic as a free agent in September 2025 after leaving Spanish side Sevilla. His debut season in Scotland has been hampered by injury issues. However, the 29-year-old has now scored six goals in all competitions this term. He looks to be finding his best form at a crucial point in the season.

The victory keeps Celtic on track for a domestic double this year. They currently lead the Scottish Premiership and will face Dunfermline Athletic in the cup final on May 23. Iheanacho expressed his excitement after the game and thanked the supporters for their energy. He urged the fans to show similar support when the team returns to Hampden Park for the final.

The former Leicester City man is now expected to play a major role in the closing weeks of the campaign. Celtic’s coaching staff will be pleased to see him regaining full fitness. His presence provides a different dimension to an attack that struggled at times during the second half of the semi-final.
