Ex-Celtic striker urges Balogun to retain Rangers backline position

Posted : 26 April 2024

Former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie insists that Leon Balogun deserves to maintain his position in the Rangers backline following his impressive performance in the Scottish FA Cup semifinal against Hearts.

Despite returning to Ibrox Stadium last summer, the Nigeria international has struggled to secure a consistent spot, featuring in only fifteen out of 53 possible matches across all competitions and notably being omitted from the Europa League squad.

Manager Philippe Clement has preferred Connor Goldson, who has started in 41 matches this season, leaving Balogun facing uncertainty over his future role in the team.

Balogun's standout display against Heart of Midlothian FC has posed a dilemma for Clement ahead of Rangers' upcoming match against St. Mirren.

With Balogun's contract expiring in two months, McAvennie believes the defender should be given a new deal, emphasizing his potential contribution to the team's success.

McAvennie expressed his view to Football Insider, highlighting Balogun's stellar performance against Hearts and suggesting that Rangers fans would be disappointed if Goldson were to immediately reclaim his spot in the lineup.

Acknowledging the importance of squad depth for Rangers' upcoming fixtures, McAvennie believes Balogun's contribution warrants a contract extension, despite his age.

Echoing McAvennie's sentiments, club legend Ally McCoist recently praised Balogun as the best central defender at Rangers, further emphasizing his value to the team.
