Selim Soydan, a former Beşiktaş player, has suggested that the course of the Süper Lig season could have been affected by the public dispute between Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, which took place just before the transfer window closed.
Soydan indicated that had the conflict not occurred 48 hours before the end of the window, the dynamics of the title race in Turkey might have unfolded in a different way. He hinted that the outcome of the season could have been changed, possibly altering the competition between the Turkish giants.
The Telegol commentator noted that although Osimhen was not directly linked with a move to Galatasaray, the speculation surrounding his dispute with Napoli sparked rumors that the club may have considered pursuing the striker during the summer transfer window.
The fierce competition between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe for the Süper Lig title made the acquisition of a player like Osimhen highly significant. His potential addition to either team could have tipped the balance in the title race, given his formidable talent and reputation.
Osimhen, who played a key role in Napoli’s Serie A victory in the 2022–23 season, is regarded as one of Europe’s most valuable forwards. His goal-scoring ability, physicality, and dynamic playing style have attracted interest from several top European clubs.
However, Osimhen’s relationship with Napoli became tense as a result of ongoing contract disputes and other internal issues. These tensions ultimately led to the breakdown of potential moves to clubs like Al-Ahli and Chelsea, with the transfer window closing without a resolution.
Soydan believes that had Osimhen’s situation been resolved before the window closed, the trajectory of the Süper Lig title race could have been different. His presence at a rival club like Galatasaray could have shifted the balance of power, adding another layer of intrigue to what has already been an intense season.
