Everton hit with two-point deduction for PSR breach

Posted : 08 April 2024

An independent panel has imposed a two-point deduction on Everton for violating the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR), marking the second time this season the club has faced a points penalty. The decision was made following a three-day hearing last month, during which the panel considered Everton's admitted breach of £16.6 million and various mitigating factors presented by the club.

As a result of the points deduction, Everton has slipped to 16th place in the Premier League standings, just two points above the relegation zone. The Premier League indicated that a dispute persists regarding the accounting treatment of Everton's new stadium funds, which could lead to further penalties. Everton has expressed intentions to appeal the decision, citing concerns over inconsistencies in the application of points deductions across different cases.

The independent commission's report outlined the rationale behind the two-point deduction, which considered mitigating factors such as previous punishments, sponsorship losses due to geopolitical events, and Everton's early admission of breaching PSRs.

However, certain other mitigating factors, including the construction of the new stadium, were not deemed significant. Everton had already faced a points deduction earlier in the season for a prior PSR breach, while Nottingham Forest, another club in relegation contention, was also penalized for a similar offense.
