Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Posted : 30 October 2026

Everton secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with an impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The result ended the Toffees' recent winless run and earned David Moyes' team a quarter-final meeting with League Two side Fleetwood Town.

James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute, putting Everton ahead with a well-placed finish after Hayden Hackney created the opportunity. The hosts doubled their advantage just before the interval when Hackney converted Thierno Barry's cross, registering his first goal since joining Everton from Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window.

Everton continued their impressive performance after the restart, despite Newcastle introducing Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa in an attempt to change the direction of the contest. The visitors struggled to turn their increased attacking threat into goals, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making important interventions to protect Everton's advantage.

The home side eventually put the contest beyond Newcastle in the 69th minute. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered an excellent ball into the penalty area, allowing Barry to finish confidently and score his seventh goal of the season.

Newcastle managed to find the net late in the game when Dan Burn headed home Joe Willock's cross in the 88th minute. However, the goal came too late to inspire a comeback, as Everton comfortably held on to secure their progression. Tensions briefly flared between players following the goal, resulting in a confrontation on the pitch.

Before kick-off, Everton had confirmed that Jack Grealish would miss the encounter because of a breach of club discipline. Reports indicated that the Manchester City loanee had missed a training session without authorisation. Nevertheless, his absence did not prevent Moyes' team from producing an effective performance.

Everton's attention will now turn to their quarter-final assignment against Fleetwood Town, who produced a major upset by eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw. The encounter, scheduled for the week beginning December 14, presents Everton with an opportunity to move closer to their first League Cup final since 1984.

The Merseyside club have never lifted the League Cup, having finished runners-up in 1977 and 1984. Their most recent major trophy remains the 1995 FA Cup, making this season's competition an important opportunity to end a lengthy wait for silverware.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will have an immediate opportunity to respond when both teams meet again in the Premier League at St James' Park on Monday.
