Evangelos Marinakis Sues Crystal Palace Over Controversial Fan Banner

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has launched a defamation claim against Crystal Palace after supporters displayed a provocative banner targeting him during a Premier League match.

Marinakis' lawyers filed the case at the High Court on Monday, naming Crystal Palace and unidentified individuals as defendants. The legal action relates to a banner displayed at Selhurst Park during Palace's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in August 2025.

The banner showed Marinakis appearing to hold a gun against the head of Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. It also contained sarcastic references to allegations involving blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking and corruption. Marinakis has consistently denied any wrongdoing connected to those allegations.

The incident was already the subject of disciplinary action from the Football Association. Palace were initially charged in November 2025 over the conduct of their supporters and were eventually fined £50,000 in February 2026 after an independent commission found the charge proven.

The FA said the club had failed to ensure supporters did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive, insulting or provocative manner. Palace had denied wrongdoing before the commission upheld the case.

The banner emerged during a period of particularly strained relations between Palace and Forest. Palace had been removed from the Europa League over UEFA's multi-club ownership regulations, allowing Forest to take their place in the competition.

Gibbs-White was also at the centre of a major transfer story at the time. Tottenham Hotspur appeared to activate a reported £60 million release clause, but the England international ultimately remained at Forest and subsequently signed a new contract with the club.

Marinakis is now seeking legal redress over the banner, arguing that its content was defamatory. Neither Crystal Palace nor Marinakis' legal representatives have publicly commented in detail on the latest proceedings.
