EuroMatch NPFL Reintroduces Friday Night Games to Boost Fan Experience and Live Coverage

Posted : 09 October 2026

The EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is bringing Friday night matches back to its schedule as part of efforts to improve the fan experience and expand television coverage. The change takes effect from Matchday 8 of the 2026/27 season, giving supporters more opportunities to watch their favourite teams during evening fixtures.

The revised schedule is also expected to benefit fans who follow the league through television broadcasts. Organisers are working to increase the number of matches shown live, making more games accessible to viewers across Nigeria and beyond.

According to the league, its broadcast partner, Murphy Ben International, has acquired additional modern production equipment. The investment is expected to support the establishment of new regional production centres and ease the logistical challenges involved in covering matches across different venues.

EuroMatch NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Dr Ayo Abdulrahman, had explained the need for the revised schedule in a memo to club chairmen and general managers. He said the original fixture framework limited the number of match days available to broadcast partners.

The new arrangement is designed to provide greater flexibility for television production and improve the league's broadcast offering. It also reflects efforts to strengthen the commercial appeal of the NPFL and bring domestic football closer to its supporters.

Under the Matchday 8 schedule, three live matches are planned across Friday and the weekend. Katsina will host Friday's fixtures, while Kano will stage Saturday and Sunday matches involving Ranchers Bees, Barau FC and their respective visiting opponents.

The return of Friday night football could help create a more engaging match-day atmosphere. It also offers supporters with busy weekend schedules another opportunity to attend games or follow the action on television.

Meanwhile, the league has fined Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffery Buter ₦500,000 over public statements concerning the NPFL and its match officials.

The decision followed an inquiry conducted on Wednesday, October 7, into comments Buter made after Sporting Lagos' Lagos Derby against Ikorodu City on Wednesday, September 30. According to the league, the coach admitted that his post-match interview contained statements he should not have made.

The disciplinary panel said it considered his admission and relatively limited experience in the NPFL when deciding on the sanction. Buter was also cautioned against making further unsubstantiated public statements about the league and referees.

The NPFL urged coaches and club officials to avoid comments that could damage public confidence in the competition. It advised them to use established dispute-resolution channels to raise complaints and seek redress.

Buter has seven working days to pay the fine. Failure to comply could result in more severe disciplinary measures.
