Espanyol’s Winless Run Could Hand Barcelona La Liga Title Against Real Madrid

Posted : 01 May 2026

RCD Espanyol could unintentionally play a decisive role in the La Liga title race when they host Real Madrid CF on Sunday, with their ongoing winless run in 2026 potentially handing the championship to city rivals FC Barcelona.

Espanyol began the season strongly and were pushing for European qualification at Christmas, but their form has collapsed dramatically in the second half of the campaign. Now sitting in mid-table and only a few points above the relegation zone, they have gone 16 matches without a victory since the start of the year.

Their decline has been particularly painful for fans, especially after a series of missed opportunities to end the drought. The team’s coach, Manolo González, has admitted that his players are struggling under pressure, saying that despite their effort, results are no longer matching performances.

Barcelona’s dominance at the top of the table means they are close to securing the title, with a potential scenario where a win over Osasuna combined with dropped points by Real Madrid against Espanyol would confirm them as champions. Barça currently hold an 11-point advantage over their rivals with only a few matches remaining.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are also under pressure after a disappointing season by their standards. Injuries to key players, including Kylian Mbappé and Éder Militão, have added to their struggles, and the club risks finishing the campaign without a major trophy.

Coach Álvaro Arbeloa has urged his side to finish strongly, stressing the importance of consistency regardless of circumstances. There is also growing speculation about possible managerial changes in the summer as Madrid look to reset after a difficult season.

With Espanyol fighting for survival and Real Madrid aiming to delay Barcelona’s celebrations, Sunday’s clash carries major implications at both ends of the table, even as the title race edges closer to its conclusion.
