Erik ten Hag Emerges as Leading Candidate to Replace Resigned Ajax Coach Francesco Farioli

Posted : 20 May 2025

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is being considered for a return to Ajax Amsterdam next season, according to the club’s technical director, Alex Kroes. Ten Hag, who has been without a managerial role since his dismissal in October, is a leading candidate to replace Francesco Farioli, who resigned as Ajax’s head coach earlier this week. Kroes revealed in an interview with Dutch television NOS that Ten Hag has been on the club’s radar for some time due to his successful previous stint.

Ten Hag was present at Ajax’s final Eredivisie match against FC Twente on Sunday as a spectator, where the team secured a 2-0 victory but ultimately fell short of winning the league title to PSV Eindhoven.

The 55-year-old coach had an impressive tenure at Ajax from 2018 to 2022, during which he guided the team to three league championships and led them to the Champions League semifinals in 2019 after starting from the qualifying rounds.

Farioli’s decision to step down followed a disappointing late-game collapse against Groningen in their penultimate match, where Ajax lost a 2-1 lead deep into stoppage time. This result all but handed the Eredivisie crown to PSV.

Kroes recounted how Farioli expressed doubts about continuing after that game and eventually resigned due to disagreements with the Ajax board over the direction of the team for the upcoming season, despite acknowledging that the title race was not the main factor behind his decision.

The 36-year-old Italian coach shared the emotional difficulty of his departure, admitting to tears after informing players and staff of his resignation. Farioli praised the club’s ambitions, including Champions League football and high expectations for the league, but felt the need for urgent changes that he believed could not be reconciled with the club’s leadership. This disagreement led him to conclude that stepping down was the best choice for both himself and Ajax.
