Erik ten Hag has expressed his disappointment at Bayer Leverkusen’s decision to part ways with him after just two Bundesliga matches, describing the move as a complete surprise and a sign of lost trust from the club’s hierarchy. The 55-year-old Dutchman was appointed in May on a two-year deal following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid but lasted only two league fixtures.
Leverkusen opened their season with a 2-1 home defeat to TSG Hoffenheim before drawing 3-3 against 10-man Werder Bremen, results that triggered Ten Hag’s abrupt exit on Monday. In a statement released by his agency on social media, Ten Hag said: “To part ways with a coach after just two league matches is unprecedented. I started this job with full conviction and energy, but unfortunately the management was not willing to grant me the time and trust I needed.”
The coach also pointed to the challenges he faced after Leverkusen lost several key players during the summer transfer window, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Granit Xhaka, and Amine Adli. Following last season’s historic treble under Alonso—where the club won its first Bundesliga title unbeaten, lifted the German Cup, and reached the Europa League final—expectations remained high despite the exodus.
Ten Hag, who had been out of work since leaving Manchester United in October 2024, emphasized that his past success came when clubs trusted his process. His most notable achievements came with Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie titles and guided the team to the 2019 Champions League semifinals. “Clubs that placed their trust in me have been rewarded with success and silverware,” he said.
