Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been announced as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, signing a two-year deal with the Bundesliga club. The Dutch tactician takes over from Xabi Alonso, who departed the club after a highly successful season to take charge at Real Madrid.
Ten Hag has been without a managerial role since his dismissal from Manchester United in October, when the team was struggling in 14th place in the Premier League. His most notable achievements came during his time at Ajax Amsterdam, where between 2018 and 2022 he led the club to three Eredivisie titles and a memorable run to the Champions League semifinals in 2019.
Leverkusen, who claimed a historic double under Alonso by winning the Bundesliga unbeaten and securing the German Cup, also reached the Europa League final. Though ten Hag had been considered for a return to Ajax, he ultimately chose to join Leverkusen, who finished second in the league behind Bayern Munich this season.
