Eric Chelle Omits Victor Osimhen From Super Eagles Squad Amid Looming Summer Transfer Speculation

Posted : 01 June 2026

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has sparked intense transfer speculation regarding Victor Osimhen after leaving the striker out of Nigeria's upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The 26-year-old forward recently completed a highly successful campaign with Turkish champions Galatasaray. However, elite European clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain are currently battling to secure his services in a blockbuster summer deal.

Chelle explained his tactical selection choice during a press briefing following Nigeria's recent 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the Unity Cup final. The Franco-Malian strategist emphasized that international selection requires undivided attention from every individual; he preferred to let the forward handle his career discussions in peace. The head coach noted that splitting focus between high-stakes negotiations and national team responsibilities is never ideal for a player's performance on the pitch.

The omission comes at a critical time for the national team as they prepare for a major rebuilding process. Nigeria failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup; this failure remains a massive source of personal disappointment for the head coach. Chelle is highly motivated to use these challenging European fixtures to restore pride and test the true depth of his developmental squad.

The Super Eagles face a difficult double-header without their primary offensive talisman or Atletico Madrid forward Ademola Lookman, who was also excused due to extreme fatigue. Nigeria will trade tackles with Poland in Warsaw on June 3 before traveling to face Portugal on June 10. Several other squad members like Samson Tijani and Alhassan Yusuf will also miss out due to visa processing delays at the embassy.

Despite losing multiple key stars to administrative and transfer issues, Chelle remains incredibly defiant about Nigeria's chances against top-tier European opposition. He stated that the remaining players will travel to fight with their collective strengths and weaknesses; opponents will have to work hard to earn a victory. The three-time African champions view these friendly matches as vital preparation for future competitive continental qualifiers.
