Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has praised the home-based stars who featured in Tuesday's 2-0 victory against Zimbabwe. The invitational Unity Cup semi-final match took place at The Valley stadium in London. Millwall winger Femi Azeez scored both goals to secure Nigeria a spot in the tournament final.
Chelle handed starting roles to Enugu Rangers defenders Chibueze Oputa and Kenneth Igboke during the match. Ikorodu City midfielders Tosin Oyedokun and Aderemi Adeoye also made second-half appearances as late substitutes. The Franco-Malian manager expressed satisfaction with their tactical discipline despite the immense pressure of playing in Europe.
The manager insisted that the domestic league players must continue working hard to secure permanent spots. He noted that the technical crew requires more scouting time to integrate local talents properly. Goalkeeper Michael Atata, Tijani Al-Ameen, and Ayobami Junior were the unused league players on the bench.
Nigeria will face Jamaica in the championship final at the same venue on Saturday night. The Reggae Boyz defeated India 2-0 in the other semi-final fixture to set up the rematch. Several domestic league players remain hopeful of getting another opportunity to impress the coaching staff.
